Taking time off in a proactive manner helps to prevent burnout, to replenish your energy, and to achieve life/work balance. Burnout is a BLOCK to success in life, work, and love. In celebration of Mental Health Month, we are talking about how to avoid burnout by prioritizing your mental health!

Taking time off in a proactive manner helps to prevent burnout, to replenish your energy, and to achieve life/work balance. Burnout is a BLOCK to success in life, work, and love. In honor of Mental Health Month, we are talking about how to avoid burnout by prioritizing your mental health!

When the universe sent me the message to “SLOW DOWN”, I decided to take a mental health day! I took a random day off from work and made no plans.

The universe sends me these messages in dreams, and when I don’t listen, it sends me stronger messages in the form of physical discomfort, pain, infection, injury, etc. so that I have no choice but to pause, stop, and take a time-out!!

Align your actions and energy with your values, mission, and vision can help decrease your chances of burnout.

  • The 42% rule in burnout: The percentage of time your body and brain need you to spend resting is about 10 hours of every 24 hours.  It doesn’t have to be every day; it can average out over a week or month.

“We’re not saying you should take 42 percent of your time to rest; we’re saying if you don’t take the 42 percent, the 42 percent will take you. It will grab you by the face, shove you to the ground, put its foot on your chest, and declare itself the victor….

Have you ever come down with a terrible cold as soon as you finished a huge project? Have you found yourself sleeping 12 or 14 hours every day for the first three days of vacation? Have you, like Amelia, literally ended up in the hospital after a prolonged period of extreme stress? ….

We’ve established by now that stress is a physiological phenomenon that impacts every system and function in our bodies, including immune functioning, digestive functioning, and hormones. To keep all of those systems in full working order, our biology requires that we spend 42 percent of our lives maintaining the organism of our physical existence.”

  • Mental Health America is a nonprofit organization that has issued recommendations to help strike a balance between work and home life.

Among these recommendations are:

  • Set manageable goals each day
  • Be realistic about workloads and deadlines
  • Take care of important tasks first and eliminate unessential ones
  • Ask for help
  • Ask for flexibility (such as working from home one day per week or working flexible hours)

Recommendations to consider at home:

  • Unplug. 24/7 use of technology could cause burnout
  • Don't overcommit and don't be afraid to say no
  • Stay active. Regular exercise can reduce stress
  • Get help. Either chat with friends or family or seek mental health counseling

Burnout is highly correlated with job dissatisfaction.

When you are performing a job or task that brings you satisfaction, you are less likely to experience burnout. If your job does not bring you satisfaction, you might find another activity outside of your job that is fulfilling and brings you purpose, passion, and joy.

The dream that I discussed in episode 113 gave me the message to slow down, helped resolve my emotional conflict about going on vacation and leaving work for an extended period of time.

Encouragement to take inventory of your life and your energy - body, mind, heart, soul, and spirit. The title of this episode “Take Time Off” comes from my January 2020 Vision Board. At that point in my life, my vision and goal was to expand my practice. The universe put us all in a time-out during Pandemic 2020.  It was terrifying and devastating.  We also were provided with the opportunity to cherish special moments and to slow down.

Take time off to attend to your health and wellness, our family and friends, our passions and purpose!
